Freedom, Inc. was formed in 1962 as a grassroots political organization. The organization was birthed out of the struggle to gain control of elected offices within predominantly African-American districts. Freedom, Inc. was organized so that African-American voters could unite under the same banner to differentiate between candidates and issues endorsed by the African-American community.
